From August to November you can harvest apples in your own garden. Some types of apples can be stored for months. Others spoil quickly. You can preserve the delicious fruits very well by boiling them with or without sugar. We'll tell you how to do it.
How can I preserve apples?
To preserve apples, they can either be canned without sugar by boiling them in water with lemon juice and spices, or they can be canned with sugar in the oven by boiling them in sugar water with lemon juice, raisins and cinnamon be cooked.
Canning apples without sugar
Boiling ensures the necessary shelf life, sugar as a preservative is not absolutely necessary.
Ingredients:
- 1 kilo apples
- 1 liter of water
- Juice of half a lemon
- Half a vanilla pod and/or some ginger
Preparation
- First sterilize the jars.
- Wash apples, peel, remove core and cut into wedges.
- Drizzle with lemon juice.
- Boil water and add vanilla or ginger.
- Pour apples into the jars and top up with hot water. The fruits must be completely covered.
- Close the jars tightly and place them in a large pot of water (preserving pot). They should be about three quarters covered.
- Bring the water to the boil and leave the glasses in the water bath for half an hour.
- then take out the glasses and let them cool.
Cooking apples with sugar in the oven
The addition of sugar makes the cooked apples even more aromatic. You can adjust the sweetness according to your own taste.
Ingredients
- 1 kilo apples
- 1 liter of water
- 150 to 200 g sugar
- Juice of half a lemon
- To taste: raisins and cinnamon
Preparation
- Sterilize jars.
- Wash apples, peel them, remove the core and cut into cubes.
- Drizzle with lemon juice.
- Bring the sugar, water and cinnamon to the boil.
- Add the apple cubes, mixed with the raisins if desired, into the glasses. There should be at least two centimeters free below the edge.
- Fill with sugar water until the apples are completely covered.
- Place filled jars in a roasting pan.
- Pour about three centimeters of water into the roasting pan.
- Place in the oven on the lowest rack.
- Heat to 180 degrees and watch whether bubbles appear.
- As soon as this is the case, switch off and leave the glasses in the oven for another half hour.
- Remove and let cool.
Tip
If you use unsprayed apples, you don't have to throw away the apple peel. Dried, they are a he althy and low-calorie snack. When chopped, you can make delicious apple tea from the peels.
