In summer its expansive crown provides cool shade, in winter even the black fruit clusters remain on the branches. An ash tree is not only impressive because of its enormous height. But it is precisely this that makes the worthwhile deciduous tree unsuitable for many gardens. But if you pay attention to a few things when planting, nothing stands in the way of having an ash tree in your own garden.
How to plant an ash tree in the garden?
To plant an ash tree in the garden, choose a sunny location and moist, nutrient-rich soil. Dig a medium-deep hole, plant the tree with root ball, fill with soil and water adequately. Support young ash trees in strong winds.
Selection of location
Although young ash trees are happy with shady conditions, for optimal growth the ash tree should not be planted as an undergrowth. Lots of light and sun make the tree grow quickly.
Soil requirements
- moist
- nutrient-rich
- cool
- pH value higher than 4
- water storing
- dry floors also possible
Note height of growth
Ash trees grow up to 40 meters high and are therefore one of the largest deciduous trees in Europe. Its trunk can be 2 meters in diameter. On the one hand, this growth is impressive, but on the other hand, it also causes arguments at the garden fence and complications with buildings. So only plant an ash tree in your garden if there is enough space available. There must not be any walls in the immediate vicinity.
Tip
Are you not sure whether a tree of this size will fit in your garden? Species that have a noticeably narrower growth are also available commercially. You can also often find these on streets where they are used for greenery. So you don't have to do without an ash tree in your own garden, despite the lack of space.
Planting ash trees
- dig a medium deep hole
- put the young tree in it. It's best to buy a specimen with a root ball at the tree nursery
- fill the remaining voids with soil
- now water the substrate sufficiently
Tip
Young ash trees are at risk of collapsing quickly in strong winds. If possible, fix the tree to a support (€14.00 on Amazon).
