Juicy, low-calorie stems and a delicate seasoning make celery a popular vegetable and aromatic seasoning for the kitchen. Its cultivation in the garden is easy if its requirements for location, soil, sowing, transplanting as well as season and growth are taken into account.
How do you plant celery?
Celery is grown at home in cultivation containers from the end of February and planted in the bed after the Ice Saints. Make sure you have a sunny location, nutrient-rich soil and a good planting neighborhood. Harvest begins in June and ends before frost in October.
What varieties does celery have?
“Tango” and “Improved Golden Giant Celery” are self-bleaching varieties. Other popular varieties include “Spartacus F1” and “Tall Utah”.
What location should the celery stalk get?
Celery grows best in full sun. A sheltered spot in the garden protects the sensitive plants from the cold.
A bucket also offers good growing conditions for celery stalks. The bucket is also placed in a sunny location.
What does the soil have to be like?
As a heavy eater, celery consumes many nutrients. If you don't have the ideal nutrient-rich soil, you can improve your normal garden soil by enriching it with compost. Additional fertilizer is added as the celery plants grow.
After planting, the substrate is aerated and freed from weeds by regular hoeing. Sufficient moisture is required, especially in summer.
A good neighborhood
Celery likes to share space in the bed with lettuce, cabbage, radishes and cucumbers.
The company of fennel, turnips, potatoes and parsley, however, does not accompany celery.
How is sowing done?
Celery is not sown directly into the bed. If you don't want to buy plants, you can grow celery plants yourself at home without much effort. Growing in small containers (€10.00 on Amazon) begins indoors from the end of February.
When should celery be planted in the bed?
The end of the Ice Saints is generally a good time for planting cold-sensitive young plants, including celery.
How to plant celery stalks?
Immediately before planting, the soil is thoroughly hoeed again. The plants are carefully placed in the ground at a distance of approx. 30 cm.
Then the earth is firmly pressed down. If the young plants fall over, it is harmless. Young plants only like a little water. As the plant grows, the water requirement increases.
When does the harvest season begin?
The harvest of the first celery stalks begins in June. If necessary, the poles are gradually cut off. The last stalks should be harvested by October as it cannot tolerate frost.
Tips & Tricks
The celery stalks are made particularly tender by bleaching them before harvesting. For non-self-bleaching varieties, wrap the poles around 30 cm high with newspaper or wrapping paper for three weeks in September or early October. Without sunlight, the stems bleach.
