In order for a Ficus benjamina to develop magnificently in living and working spaces, the location must be chosen carefully. In its tropical distribution areas, the birch fig thrives as a forest and clearing tree, which requires a special combination of temperature and light conditions. You can find out all the important criteria for the optimal location here.
Which location is best for a Ficus Benjamini?
The ideal location for a Ficus Benjamini is sunny to partially shaded, with temperatures between 22-28°C in summer and not below 18°C in winter. A humidity of more than 50 percent is also recommended. Green-leaved varieties tolerate more shade, while variegated-leaved varieties require more sun.
The best location conditions in a nutshell
Since a birch fig loses its leaves when it is repeatedly changed location, please look for a place with these basic conditions:
- Sunny to partially shaded location
- In summer with temperatures between 22 and 28 degrees Celsius
- In winter not below 18 degrees Celsius
- Preferably with a humidity of more than 50 percent
Green-leaved Benjamini varieties show their green side even in light shade. In full sun they suffer fatal sunburn. In contrast, variegated hybrids develop the decorative coloring of their leaves perfectly in a sunny location, as long as they are protected from the blazing summer sun at midday.
Summer freshness on the balcony is desirable
The birch fig shows its most beautiful side when it can enjoy the unfiltered sunlight and fresh air on the balcony between May and September. Of course, only clear out your Benjamini when the nighttime temperatures no longer fall below 16 degrees. To ensure that the summer season begins smoothly, a Ficus benjamina should first acclimatize in a shady spot for 8 to 10 days.
Tip
In order to survive the problematic winter period and the lack of light unscathed, we recommend a location in a light-flooded bedroom. At temperatures of around 18 degrees Celsius, the birch fig compensates for the lack of light between December and February. At the same time, the numerous leaves of your Benjamini filter pollutants from the air you breathe.
