The chokeberry (also known as aronia berry) originally comes from North America. Thanks to decades of breeding, it is accustomed to the continental European climate and can withstand all weather hazards. The aronia bush is tough, extremely easy to care for and is ideal for gardeners without the famous “green thumb” - basically you can't go wrong when caring for this plant.

Which location is best for aronia bushes?

The ideal location for aronia bushes offers plenty of sun, moderate water (preferably rainwater) and loose, well-drained soil. Sunnier locations lead to more berry production and the plant grows well up to altitudes of 900 meters.

Aronia loves the sun

If you want to harvest a lot of aronia berries, you should plant your bush/bushes - if possible, you should plant aronia in at least two pairs, due to the better fertilization rate - in a sunny place. The shrub also feels comfortable in partial shade, although the sunnier the location, the more berries are produced. By the way, the aronia thrives both in the northern German lowlands and in higher mountain areas. You can safely plant an aronia up to a height of 900 meters - it's not for nothing that the plant is considered extremely robust.

Make sure the soil is loose and moist

In addition to a place in the sun, the aronia bush also needs loose, moist soil. Depending on the quality of the soil and the position of the sun, it will be decided whether you need to water additionally or not. Sandy soils, for example, need more frequent watering than clay soils. In principle, you should only water the latter if the summer is very hot and dry.

What does an Aronia need to feel good?

  • lots of sun
  • moderate water (preferably rainwater)
  • a loose, permeable soil

By the way, it is not necessary to fertilize the aronia.

Tips & Tricks

Aronia bushes grow excellently even with moderately good care. The plant is therefore ideal for creating a hedge - from which you can also harvest plenty of fruit in autumn.
