From a botanical point of view, every strawberry plant is a perennial. Nevertheless, there are striking divergences within the varieties. The following lines explain what these are and what conclusions can be drawn from them for growing strawberries.
Are strawberry plants perennial?
Strawberry plants are perennials that are either single-bearing or remontant. You harvest once-bearing varieties from May to June/July, while remontant varieties bear fruit twice a year - in June/July and August/September.
Wearing once or refitting – the striking difference
The strawberry genus is home to diverse species and varieties. The garden strawberry or cultivated strawberry plays an important leading role here, thanks to its large fruits with a wonderful taste. The extensive variety of varieties is divided into strawberry plants that bear once and those that bear multiple times (remontant). This is how the difference is defined:
- single-bearing strawberries: harvest from May to June/July, depending on early, mid-early or late variety
- multiple-bearing strawberries: harvest in June/July and after a rest period again in August/September
In addition, there are still monthly strawberries, but they do not come from the garden strawberry. They are based on the native wild strawberry with tireless flowering and continuous fruiting until the first frost.
The best single-bearing cultivated strawberries
The following strawberry varieties have proven to be excellent for growing in the garden:

In the second and third year after planting, these perennial strawberries produce a bountiful harvest. If you mark the most productive specimens each year and propagate them using offshoots, the fruit enjoyment will continue uninterrupted from season to season.

If you would rather harvest juicy, sweet strawberries several times a year, these varieties come to the fore:

Experience has shown that the fruit cover for the second harvest in late summer is significantly reduced. The strawberry varieties make up for this shortcoming with even tastier fruits, from which you can conjure up tempting jam by boiling.
Tips & Tricks
Regardless of whether you grow strawberry plants that bear once or multiple times. If you sacrifice the first flowers after planting by selectively pinching them out, this courageous measure will have a beneficial effect on flower and fruit formation. For everbearing strawberry varieties, you can even continue to break out the flowers until the end of May to benefit from a bountiful harvest.
