How big does an almond tree get?
An almond tree can reach a height of 2 to 9 meters, although its size depends on the variety and climate. In southern climates it can even grow up to 10 meters tall and bloom profusely.
The Prunus family
The almond tree belongs to the Prunus genus. Within this it is at home in the subgenus Amygdalus. Carl von Linné published his official scientific name for the first time in 1753.
A general distinction is made between sweet and bitter almonds. Last but not least, the genus name Amygdalus refers to the existence of the toxic hydrogen cyanide in the almond fruit. However, a harmful amount is only found in raw bitter almonds.
Small shrub makes a big impression
Almonds were originally grown primarily in southern climates. There it reaches an impressive size of up to 10 meters. With appropriate care, you can expect a harvest that is as rich as it is digestible.
Traditionally, long iron bars were used for this. With the help of these, harvest workers shook down the nutty fruits. As time goes on, almond farmers are also taking advantage of technological advances. However, this is increasingly leading to the decline of large almond plantations in southern countries.
Nevertheless, the almond blossom is celebrated annually in this country with great festivities and culinary delights.
