The pomelo is a relatively young cross between pomelo and grapefruit. However, it is not a separate species, but is botanically assigned to the grapefruit (Citrus maxima). The pulp of the pomelo tastes similar to that of its parents, but milder. The honey pomelo from southern China is also very popular.
When is the pomelo harvest time?
The harvest time for pomelo is mainly between November and April and in the summer months of July and August. It is grown in the “citrus belt,” particularly in Israel and South Africa, so it is available all year round.
Pomelo is in season all year round
The pomelo is grown worldwide in the so-called “citrus belt”, i.e. H. grown between the 20th and 40th parallels both north and south of the equator. In these subtropical regions, the warmth-loving tree finds optimal growth conditions. The main growing areas are in Israel and South Africa, which is why the pomelo can be harvested all year round. However, the main harvest time is the months between November and April and the summer months of July and August. The honey pomelo, which comes from southern China, is also in season in winter.
Tips & Tricks
Try the delicious citrus fruit in a completely different way: Pomelo also tastes great in combination with briefly fried meat (e.g. beef or chicken) and fresh leaf salads. It goes well with a sweet and sour dressing made from olive oil and orange juice. If you can make it the original Thai way, add finely chopped kaffir lime leaves and baby spinach.
