When the garden is still dormant in late winter, restless hobby gardeners devote their energy to growing plants indoors. A pineapple plant gives the campaign an exotic flair. We show you how this exciting experiment can be done very easily.
How do you grow a pineapple plant?
To grow a pineapple plant, cut off the leaf crown with pulp, pull off lower leaves, remove the pulp and let it dry. Provide roots in low-lime water and then plant them in lean substrate with warmth and moisture.
Armaments and preparation work
The pivotal point for a successful process is a ripe pineapple, which presents itself with a lush green tuft of leaves. Investing in a high-quality flying pineapple is worth it because these fruits are harvested when fully ripe and are not exposed to low temperatures for storage. You will also need nutrient-poor substrate, a glass of water, a plastic bag and a sharp knife. This is how it continues:
- cut off the leaf crown with 2-3 centimeters of pulp
- pull off the bottom 2-3 of the circular rows of leaves in a downward movement
- Carefully remove the pulp from the stalk with a spoon
Under the pulp you can see small bumps on the stalk. These are sprout points from which the roots are to be drawn out. This still damp area is placed on the heater to dry for a few hours. Then fill a container with low-lime water to insert the leaf crown into. The water must not reach the leaves.
How to properly plant a rooted leafy plant
Every day you can now watch how small, delicate root strands thrive. From a length of 8-10 centimeters, they are planted in substrate. This is how it works:
- half fill a cultivation pot with lean substrate, such as standard soil, cactus or pricking substrate
- add a little quartz sand, perlite or expanded clay to improve permeability
- make a depression in the ground with your fist
- Put the leaf crown in there and surround it with substrate up to the lower row of leaves
- put a plastic bag over it after watering
In the partially shaded, warm window seat, the pineapple plant is busily rooting. The most important requirement is a constant temperature of 25 to 30 degrees Celsius. If a fresh leaf emerges from the leaf rosette, the plastic cover is removed. Pamper the young pineapple plant regularly with a spray of lime-free water. Place humidifiers or fill the coaster with pebbles and water.
Tips & Tricks
Avoid giving a pineapple plant water into the leaf rosette. In contrast to other bromeliads, it tolerates standing water very poorly.
