If a basil only has unsightly spotted leaves instead of lush green leaves, there is an urgent need for action. In order to cure the kingweed, the cause is first investigated. You can find out what problems manifest themselves in spotty leaves here.
What causes spots on basil leaves?
Spots on basil leaves can be caused by fungal infections, such as Septoria, or alfalfa mosaic virus, which is transmitted by aphids. Preventative measures include rain-protected and light locations, proper watering and pest control.
Fungal infections cause spotted leaves
One of the largest genera of ascomycetes called Septoria does not spare basil. The spores cause brown necrosis on the leaves, which spoils our appetite. In damp weather, the damage appears from June onwards in the form of small, spreading spots. Eventually the leaves dry out and fall off. Effective control agents are not yet known. How to prevent infection:
- cut back infected shoots except for a pair of eyes
- Plant basil at an airy distance
- do not fertilize with too much nitrogen content
- avoid low-light locations
First and foremost, a rain-protected location provides effective prevention against infestation by Septoria spores. Smart hobby gardeners add basil to their tomato plants in the garden under a rain cover.
Aphids carry the alfalfa mosaic virus with them
The symptoms of the widespread viral infection manifest themselves in the form of mosaic-like discoloration on the leaves. In addition, deformations and compression develop on the foliage of the royal herb. In the herb garden, aphids are usually the carriers of this devastating plant disease. There is no known cure. To prevent the viruses from spreading further in the garden, the infected basil should be destroyed immediately.
As a preventative measure, knowledgeable hobby gardeners take consistent action against aphids. As part of intensive research, thrips were also suspected of introducing the mosaic virus, so these pest insects should be included in the fight. Since the viruses are sometimes transmitted through infected seeds, the use of only certified quality products from specialist retailers is recommended.
Tips & Tricks
It doesn't always have to be a disease that causes spots on basil. One of the most common causes of this damage is incorrect watering behavior. Tender royal herb doesn't want to be rained on from above. The herb plant even reacts to spraying with brown spots. Therefore, always water directly to the root area.
