Mint is one of the perennial herbal plants. While the above-ground parts of the plant die off, the rhizomes underground survive the winter well. In regions with harsh winters, protection is still recommended. We explain how it works.

To protect mint in winter, cut off the above-ground parts, cover the bed with coniferous twigs or straw and place potted plants in front of the south wall of the house. Cover the substrate with sawdust or leaves and cover the container with bubble wrap (€87.00 on Amazon) or jute.
How to protect mint in the bed from frost and snow
As the gardening year comes to an end, the last flowers and leaves on the mint plants wither. After the first frost, the above-ground parts of the plant can be cut off and discarded. If a harsh winter is just around the corner, we recommend these precautions:
- Cover mint in the bed with coniferous twigs or straw
- enough air still gets through here so that no rot occurs
- Place potted plants in front of the south wall of the house on a wooden block
- cover the substrate with sawdust or leaves
- cover the vessel with bubble wrap (€87.00 on Amazon) or jute
- ideally move to a frost-free, dark winter quarters
Experienced hobby gardeners are very happy about permanent frost with bright sunshine. However, if there is no snow, it is not just the mint plants that are at risk of significant drought stress. In frozen ground, the roots cannot access moisture and no wet supplies come from above. In the face of frost, the watering can is used to supply the herb plants with water on a frost-free day.
Tips & Tricks
Do you cultivate one of the pure mint species? Then, with a bit of luck, your specimen will deliver a rich yield of pure seeds shortly before winter. Simply collect the ripe, brown fruits and remove the seeds. Stored dry and dark, you can grow a new mint next year.
