Naturally there are no flat surfaces, as irregularities arise due to plant growth and animal digging. Such structures are not desirable in the garden, so lawn straightening is necessary, especially on newly purchased properties.
How to level and level the lawn?
To level out the lawn, you can fill in unevenness by adding soil and lawn fertilizer to the depressions and pressing gently, or by breaking up/digging up the area and then smoothing it out. Avoid excessive soil compaction to promote he althy grass growth.
Fill in bumps
With this method you can level out irregularities without having to dig up the ground. The existing lawn remains intact and can continue to develop. A disadvantage is that you have to repeat the measures until the lawn reaches a level.
How to proceed:
- Cut lawn in depressions as short as possible
- fill a layer of soil that is one to two centimeters thick
- sprinkle some lawn fertilizer
- Press the soil carefully with your foot
- Repeat process when grass has grown through
Avoid rolling the areas. The more compacted the substrate is, the worse the lawn will develop. By completely filling the holes in the lawn in one go, you reduce the amount of work. Enrich the soil mixture directly with lawn seeds, as the existing grasses grow very slowly through the substrate on deeper unevenness.
Break up or dig up an area
For very deep and widespread height differences, a more radical measure is recommended. This is the case if the garden is characterized by molehills and sinks through underground passages. Break up the lawn with a plow or loosen it with a shovel. The soil can then be spread evenly to create a flat surface.
Smooth layer
Put wooden sticks into the ground at even intervals and stretch plumbed cords between the pillars. This construction will serve as a rough aid to help you form a smooth surface. Then use a straight edge (€45.00 on Amazon) with a length of two to three meters and use it to pull off the substrate. A long spirit level offers an alternative.
So that the arduous work is not ruined by the next rain, you must compact the area with a light roller. If the soil is too compacted, the grass will not grow properly and will grow unevenly.
Tip
Some hand rollers can be filled with water so that you can apply moderate pressure to the floor.
