The variety of varieties of persimmon plants is very large. Frost resistance, growth and foliage color are important for growing in your own garden. Yields only play a role in warmer areas where harvest can be expected.

What types of persimmon trees are there?

Popular persimmon tree varieties are Tipo, Cioccolatino, Rojo Brillante, Kaki Vanille or Vainiglia and Hana Fuyu. These varieties differ in frost resistance, growth, foliage color and crop yield and are suitable depending on the climate and location.

The persimmon tree (Latin: Diospyros kaki) is an ebony plant. It is a monoecious tree with elongated oval leaves and yellowish to white, unisexual flowers. The fruits are round, oval or flattened. Sometimes they look like apples, sometimes they look more like a tomato. They are very juicy and sweet, contain a lot of vitamin A and have a high nutritional value, similar to grapes.

Fruit varieties

On the shelves of fruit shops you can find different names for the bright orange fruit: Sharon, persimmon or persimmon. The fruits differ in shape, consistency and taste, as well as their origin. While the persimmon fruit, which comes from Asia, has jelly-like flesh and is only edible when ripe, the Israeli variety Sharon has practically no tannins and can be eaten when the flesh is still hard. Both Sharon and Persimmon fruits can be stored for a long time and do not cause a furry feeling on the tongue.

Plant varieties

Other representatives of the genus Ebony trees are Diospyros Lotus and Diospyros virginiana. These are used in particular as documents during finishing. The corresponding varieties are well suited to the climatic conditions outside the wine-growing regions because they are almost completely hardy and also slow-growing.

The varieties often offered in the plant trade are:

  • Tipo (the most commercially grown variety),
  • Cioccolatino (large-fruited variety),
  • Rojo Brillante (well hardy),
  • Kaki Vanilla or Vainiglia (new variety)
  • Hana Fuyu (sensitive to cold, beautiful autumn colors).

Tips & Tricks

The wood of the Diospyros kaki is black in basic tone and has a light pattern. It is therefore used in high-quality furniture construction.
