Lawn seeds need to be spread at the right time. This applies to new plants as well as reseeding and repairs. Find out when to sow your lawn correctly here.
When should you sow lawns?
The best time to sow lawns is in spring, when the ground has warmed to 10 degrees Celsius (end of April/beginning of May), or in autumn, from mid-September to October. Reseeding is suitable from April to June or September to early October.
The best time to sow a new lawn
Practically speaking, you have the opportunity to create a new lawn by sowing seeds twice a year. In order to give the sensitive seeds the best starting conditions, these two dates come into question:
- When the ground has warmed up to 10 degrees Celsius in spring
- This is usually the case at the end of April/beginning of May
- The second time window opens from mid-September until October
During the sweltering summer heat, you should refrain from sowing a lawn. High temperatures combined with dry soil make life difficult for tender seedlings.
When is the lawn sown after scarifying?
In exemplary lawn care, scarifying in spring or autumn plays an important role. What follows is usually a battered lawn. Sowing lawn seeds is an effective way to ensure that the green develops back into a dense carpet as quickly as possible. Here's how to do it:
- Sow fresh lawn seeds widely immediately after scarifying
- Ideally spread lengthwise and crosswise with a spreader (€53.00 on Amazon)
- Sift, roll and water the seeds by a maximum of 0.5 centimeters with sand or vermiculite
Don't let any time pass between combing out moss and weeds before sowing seeds. Otherwise, unwanted growth will spread where new lawn should actually thrive.
Which date is suitable for reseeding?
If the lawn has bare spots or becomes sparse overall, reseeding at the right time can remedy the problem. Instead of a completely new system, this repair option is much more straightforward. Once again, you have the opportunity to give your lawn new splendor twice a season. How to be successful:
- From April to June, stressed lawns absorb seeds particularly well
- The soil should be thawed to a depth of 15 centimeters and there should no longer be any fear of frost
- Alternatively, lawn seeds germinate and thrive in sunny soil from September to early October
If you reseed in spring, give the seeds a sufficiently long period of growth and root formation. If you decide on a date in early autumn, the natural rainfall provides important irrigation.
Tips & Tricks
The soil quality for lawn seeds is optimized by adding vital lime or rock powder as part of the preparatory work. Prudent hobby gardeners test the pH value of the future lawn beforehand. If this is significantly below the ideal result of 6-7, the soil is too acidic for lush lawn growth. A well-dosed dose of lawn lime can help here in no time.
