How can clematis be used as a privacy screen?
Clematis is suitable as a privacy screen when planted in a planter box with an integrated trellis. Suitable species include Clematis alpina 'Ruby', Clematis viticella 'Little Butterfly' and rose clematis 'Ashva'. Planting should be done with drainage, suitable substrate and root shading.
Plant the planter correctly with a trellis

Choose a planter with a volume of 30-40 liters. This is how you proceed with planting:

- Use a loose mix of garden soil, compost, leaf mold, sand and expanded clay as a substrate
- Plant the potted clematis so deep that the bottom two pairs of buds are covered with substrate
- Press the soil with your hands and water generously
Since clematis value a shaded base, then spread bark mulch (€14.00 on Amazon) or pine soil in the planter box. Alternatively, use small underplants, such as blue cushions or purple bells. Decorative balls also create shade for the roots.
The most beautiful clematis for privacy protection
For privacy protection in the garden and on the balcony in the mobile planter, Clematis species and hybrids that thrive in a narrow substrate volume can be considered. Since they don't have to cover a meter-high house wall with greenery, the following specimens with limited height growth are ideal:
- Clematis alpina 'Ruby', reaches a maximum height of 250 centimeters
- Clematis viticella 'Little Butterfly', the Italian clematis with compact growth and delicate pink flowers
- Rose clematis 'Ashva', shines at a height of 120-180 cm with light purple flowers well into autumn
In order for the clematis to climb up the trellis, it only needs a little starting help at the beginning. Attach the lower tendrils to the struts with soft binding material.
