In principle, the spider plant is not poisonous to humans or cats. However, this does not apply to the seeds of the spider plant. Consuming them causes gastrointestinal problems, as does eating large quantities of leaves.
Is the spider plant poisonous to cats?
The spider plant is largely non-toxic to cats, but eating seeds or large amounts of leaves can cause gastrointestinal problems. To avoid problems, poisonous plants should be removed and non-poisonous plants should be hung in hanging baskets.
Nevertheless, as a cat owner you don't want to go without houseplants. That's not necessary, because there are many non-poisonous plants and it is also possible to plant particularly desirable or tasty specimens in a hanging basket so that they are out of reach of animals.
On dealing with plants and animals
Cats and other pets should not eat at will, even from more or less non-poisonous plants, although the long leaves of the spider plant are very tempting. There are special feed plants for this that are also digestible in larger quantities. This is not the case with other plants and also with the spider plant; it can definitely cause nausea and diarrhea. In addition, eaten leaves do not necessarily look particularly decorative.
You should remove poisonous plants from your household. If your cat leaves the plants on the windowsill alone, then don't put catnip there either, as that could be too tempting for the cat. The windowsill should remain off limits for your pet. It's better to find another place for the catnip, for example near the sleeping area or the scratching post.
Tips for cat owners:
- no poisonous plants within reach of the cat
- Flower hanging basket for plants that should not be nibbled
- Catnip near the favorite place
