A colorful spring bouquet is on the table. Tulips and daffodils make each other shine with their bright colors. But the next day the whole thing just looks like a tragedy
How to keep daffodils and tulips together in a vase?
To arrange daffodils and tulips together in a vase, you should either seal the stem ends of daffodils under hot water or place them separately in water for 24 hours before adding them to the tulips. This neutralizes harmful mucilage.
These two early bloomers are not 'green'
Tulips and daffodils are both early bloomers. But they have different requirements and they certainly don't get along in a vase. The troublemakers who are reluctant to adapt are the poisonous daffodils. They keep competitors away by secreting a mucilage that is harmful to other plants.
The mucilage is contained in the stems. It penetrates the vase water as soon as the daffodils are cut and placed in the vase. Tulip stems in the same vase fall victim to the mucilage. The substances penetrate the ducts and clog them so that water can no longer flow to the flowers. The result: the tulips wilt prematurely.
Tips to make them friends with each other
There are two ways to have daffodils and tulips together in a vase without the tulips having to lose out. The first method goes like this: Take the daffodils and hold them with the stem ends under a stream of hot water. The stem ends then close and the mucilage can no longer escape.
The second method is as follows:
- cutting daffodils
- place in a separate vase with water
- remove from the vase after 24 hours
- put in the vase with the tulips
- Disadvantage: Daffodils must not be cut again, which reduces their flowering time
Colorful design ideas for a bouquet of tulips and daffodils
Yellow daffodils look wonderful together with flame-red tulips. White-flowering daffodils such as poet's daffodils together with pink-flowering tulips provide romantic accents. Colorful mixed bouquets of white, yellow, orange, red, pink and purple flowers also look fantastic!
Tips & Tricks
In order to last a long time in the vase, the tulips and daffodils should be placed in a cool place. The water in the vase is changed daily and a little lemon juice or baking soda nourishes the flowers well and keeps them fresh for longer.
