When and how should you transplant a star magnolia?
The best time to transplant a star magnolia is in the fall when the leaves fall or in the spring. Make sure to keep the soil warm and frost-free, not to damage the roots when digging and to choose the new location with sufficient sun and protection from the wind.
Best time: Fall of leaves in autumn
So that the star magnolia does not die after transplanting, it should be dug up and moved at the right time. The best time is in autumn when the leaves start to fall or have fallen off. Alternatively, the star magnolia can be transplanted in spring.
It is important that the ground is sufficiently warm and not frozen. This not only makes the work easier, but the plant can also develop new roots in such soil. It is also important that the star magnolia has finished its growing season.
Digging up the star magnolia
When the timing is right, you can dig up your star magnolia. First cut away old and disturbing wood. This makes transplanting or transporting the star magnolia easier.
When digging afterwards, pay attention to the following points:
- previously liked old, disturbing wood
- Star magnolia is a shallow rooter
- Excavating is easier, the younger the plant is (the smaller its root ball is)
- transplanting is more problematic after a lifespan of 4 years or more
- best: pierce all around with a spade at a distance of 50 cm from the trunk
- Damage roots as little as possible
- excavate generously and carefully
Arrived at new location
The star magnolia needs a place where it can grow unhindered. It doesn't like being cut back later so as not to harass other plants in the area. In addition to sufficient space, the location is important. The plant loves a sunny to partially shaded location in a location protected from the wind.
The planting hole should be dug twice the ball diameter. The soil is loosened up properly. Then the roots have an easier time spreading. The soil should best be mixed with peat (€8.00 on Amazon) or rhododendron soil.
After the star magnolia has been planted, it is watered abundantly over the next few days. If it does well, it can be propagated again the following year, for example by cuttings.
Tips & Tricks
Don't worry: the flowers may fail in the first and second year in the new location. It takes an average of 2 years for the star magnolia to get used to its new location.
