It's fascinating how snowdrops fight their way through an ice-cold blanket of snow with their delicate flowers. Not only garden owners can witness this spectacle. Snowdrops can be easily grown in pots. You can find out how to do this below
How do you grow snowdrops in a pot?
Snowdrops in pots need a partially shaded to shady location, well-drained substrate and normal potting soil. Plant the bulbs in autumn and water them sufficiently. Fertilize during flowering and remove wilted flowers.
Which location is suitable for potted snowdrops?
Snowdrops in pots can be placed on a balcony, a terrace, at the entrance to the house or in front of the gazebo. It is important that the location is partially shaded to shady. In the blazing sun, snowdrops in pots can dry out quickly.
The substrate: The main thing is that it is well drained
The pot in which the snowdrop is planted should be at least 4 times the height of the plant's bulb. At the bottom there are shards of pottery or pebbles. They prevent water from accumulating and damaging the roots. Next comes a layer of soil over the drainage.
The snowdrop bulb should be covered with soil at least 5 cm thick. It is placed in the ground with the tip upwards. Up to 5 bulbs can be planted per planting hole.
Normal potting soil (€6.00 on Amazon) from the store is usually enough to keep snowdrops happy. Snowdrops value the following properties of the earth:
- easy
- humos
- moderately to well nutritious
- easy to keep moist
- alkaline to neutral
Planting time of the early bloomer: During flowering
The bulbs should be planted in the pots in autumn between September and November. Early snowdrops from the garden center are bought and planted when they are blooming between the end of January and the beginning of February.
Care requirements: water and fertilize
When it comes to care, snowdrops in pots particularly value a good supply of water. They should also be fertilized with liquid fertilizer during and shortly after their flowering period.
Removing wilted flowers
The formation of seeds robs a snowdrop of immense strength. It is therefore advisable to cut off its withered flowers before the capsule fruit with seeds can develop. Most snowdrops have faded in March.
Tips & Tricks
If there is severe frost in winter, the pot with the snowdrop bulbs should be placed in a less cold place. The earth should not freeze completely. Otherwise the onion will suffer.
