Anyone who planted their daffodils half a decade ago and has not yet taken care of the care will probably soon have to search desperately for the flowers. If daffodils are not transplanted regularly and separated, they will gradually leach out in their location.
When and how should you transplant daffodils?
Daffodils should be transplanted after their flowering period between May and June when the foliage turns yellow or brown. When transplanting, separate seed bulbs from main bulbs and dig a planting hole at least 20 cm deep. Choose a location with at least 2 hours of sunshine daily.
Good reasons that make transplanting sensible
Transplanting daffodils is recommended every year when growing in pots. The reason is that the breeding bulbs take up space from the main bulb and the soil is exhausted. Daffodils in the open ground should be transplanted for the same reasons. But this is not necessary every year. It is enough to implement them every 3 to 4 years.
When should you transplant daffodils?
Daffodils should be transplanted at the end of their growing season. This is usually the case after the flowering period between May/June. You can tell when the time is right because the leaves are yellow or brown and dry.
Alternatively, daffodils can be transplanted in autumn. But then there is a good chance that you won't be able to find it anymore because the entire above-ground plant has retreated into its underground bulb. It is no longer visible on the surface.
Transplanting/repotting daffodils in a pot
Daffodils in pots are transplanted/repotted as follows:
- Dig up onions
- Separate the onions and discard if necessary
- choose a new pot (at least 20 cm deep and 10 cm wide)
- Fill the pot quarter full with pebbles (€7.00 on Amazon) and potting soil
- Insert onion(s)
- fill with potting soil
- water lightly
- put in a cool place
Transplanting daffodils in the bed – in the right place at the right time
When transplanting daffodils in the bed, they can be propagated at the same time. The main onion should be freed from the brooding onions, otherwise they will rob you of the nutrients in the soil.
Regardless of propagation, transplanting goes as follows:
- Dig the onions with a spade at a generous distance (prick approx. 20 cm deep)
- Removing soil from onions
- sort out and dispose of rotten, injured, dried onions
- choose new location
- Dig a planting hole three times as deep as the bulb's diameter and enrich the soil with compost
- Insert bulbs and cover with soil
