Daffodils – everyone knows the bright yellow heralds of spring. Some people are so fond of them that they plant them themselves in the garden or in pots in their apartment. But very few people know important facts about the bulb of this plant
What should you know about the daffodil bulb?
The daffodil bulb is the plant's powerhouse and provides energy. Be careful not to confuse the onions with onions as they are poisonous. For optimal growth, daffodils need a sunny to partially shaded place, a permeable, humus-rich, nutrient-rich, lime-free and moist soil.
The onion is the energy storage center of the daffodil
The onion is the plant's power plant and its energy storage center. With it, the daffodil survives in the ground for many years. Every year it sprouts again between February and March and produces flowers. Without the work of the onion this would not be possible.
But the power of the onion does not come from nowhere. Daffodils in pots need to be fertilized regularly throughout their growing season. Even outdoors, daffodils should be provided with moderate amounts of fertilizer, for example in the form of compost (€12.00 on Amazon). Otherwise, the onion will soon deplete the soil and die due to a lack of nutrients.
Don't cut off the daffodil leaves too early, otherwise the bulb will suffer
The onion absorbs nutrients from the leaves after flowering. Therefore, the leaves should not be cut off too early. Only cut off the leaves - if at all - when they have yellowed.
Where does a daffodil bulb grow best?
When planting a daffodil bulb, you should choose a sunny to semi-shady location. The substrate should have the following characteristics:
- permeable
- humos
- nutrient-rich
- lime-free
- humid environment
Warning: Onion is highly poisonous
Watch out! The daffodil bulb is highly poisonous. Just 1 onion can make the difference between life and death for a person. Even pets are not immune to their poison. Especially when storing the onions, be careful not to put them together with kitchen onions. The risk of confusion is high.
One makes many: After a short time, onions emerge
A single onion is suitable for propagation. It forms breeding bulbs underground, which can be dug up after flowering and planted elsewhere. If you don't separate the bulbs from each other, you run the risk that the daffodils will soon stop blooming due to a lack of nutrients.
