Very few tree fern species are considered hardy. This is perhaps the main reason why many plant lovers prefer to keep it in their homes. But whether outside or inside – tree ferns should be overwintered.
How should you overwinter a tree fern?
Tree ferns can be overwintered outdoors by shortening or tying the fronds, covering the trunk with straw mats, covering the root area with bark mulch and protecting the frond bases with fleece. In the pot they should be kept cool and moist at 5-10 °C and high humidity.
Wintering strategy in the open field
Tree ferns such as the Australian or Tasmanian tree fern can tolerate certain temperatures below zero. You can be protected in winter in the following ways:
- Cut the fronds in half or tie them together
- Cover the trunk area with straw mats
- Cover the root area with bark mulch
- Cover frond bases with fleece
Winter at home in a pot
A tree fern that was kept as a houseplant in the living room over the summer should be moved to a cool room that is not heated in late fall. Temperatures between 5 and 10 °C and high humidity are ideal. Don't forget to water!
