Is corn poppy poisonous?
Large poppy is a slightly poisonous plant that causes virtually no harm in small quantities. The immature seed pods and the milky sap in the stems are particularly poisonous. Poisoning can cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and cramps. Herbivorous animals and small children should avoid consumption.
In principle, all parts of the corn poppy are slightly poisonous, but especially the unripe seed capsules and the milk-like juice in the stems, less the flowers and leaves. Corn poppy contains various alkaloids, such as rhoeadine, which is said to have an antispasmodic effect.
Large poppies can be dangerous not only for people, but also for herbivorous animals such as ruminants, pigs or horses. Make sure it doesn't grow in the pasture.
