Cyclamens – they prefer to grow in a location with a temperature between 12 and 16 °C. Winter is usually far away. But these perennials can still survive the winter if they are properly protected or relocated if necessary.
How can you overwinter cyclamen properly?
To overwinter cyclamens successfully, plant them at least 7cm deep in the garden or place them in a cool room (10-15°C) with direct winter sun. Protect the roots outdoors with compost, leaves or brushwood and water regularly.
Winter time is flowering time
In winter, cyclamen reach the peak of their annual growing season. Then they bloom for a long time. For this reason, they are usually brought indoors over the winter or planted in the pot and put inside.
Overwintering cyclamen in the garden
But cyclamen can also be safely brought through the winter in the garden. To do this, it is necessary to plant the tubers at least 7 cm deep in the soil. Only then are they frost-proof. The tubers of potted cyclamens, on the other hand, should always protrude slightly from the soil.
Another protective measure is to cover the root area with a warming and protective layer. This can be applied, for example, in the form of compost soil. Leaves, brushwood and spruce branches are also suitable for winter protection.
The right wintering place at home and the necessary care
If cyclamen spend the winter at home, they should not be placed on the heated and air-dry windowsill. Locations with temperatures between 10 and 15 °C, such as the stairwell or bedroom, are more suitable. They can be exposed to direct winter sun.
Please note when caring for:
- water regularly (soil must not dry out)
- fertilize sparingly (e.g. liquid fertilizer (€8.00 on Amazon), stick fertilizer)
- check regularly for pest infestation
- Yellow leaves often indicate errors when watering
Tips & Tricks
Attention: In early spring (around February) the cyclamen should be made brighter and warmer again.
