Dahlia tubers are best overwintered in the cellar, if one is available. The room must be as cool and dry as possible. If you don't have a basement, a garage or garden shed might work. It is important that the Georgian tubers do not get frost.
How do I overwinter dahlia tubers in the cellar?
Dahlia tubers can overwinter in the basement by laying them out on wire racks or in uncoated wooden boxes in a cool (4-8°C) and dry room. Alternatively, airy plastic bags can be used. It is important to let the tubers dry well beforehand and avoid frost.
Overwintering in a cool, dry cellar
A cellar in which it does not get warmer than four to eight degrees and which is very dry is ideal for overwintering dahlias or georgines.
Do not place dahlia tubers too close together on wire racks (€17.00 on Amazon) or in wooden boxes without a coating.
Alternatively, you can also put the tubers in plastic bags and hang them up. Cut large holes in the bags beforehand so that the dahlia bulbs get enough air.
Tips & Tricks
Let the dahlia tubers dry well before storing, especially if you have a damp basement. Dry tubers do not rot so quickly.
