The right location for Germany
Deutzians need a lot of sun to bloom. They are just as suitable as hedge plants as well as solitary plants. Very small varieties are often planted next to terraces and in cemeteries.
The hardy ornamental shrub is only partially suitable for the pot. The pot must be large enough so that the root ball has enough space. If you grow the shrub in a pot, you must provide winter protection in winter.
Care of Deutzien
The biggest mistake you can make when caring for Deutzia is watering. The ornamental shrub cannot tolerate drought at all. Even short periods of drought cause parts of the Deutzia to die.
Gardening experts recommend creating a watering edge around the ornamental shrub that holds at least five liters of water. This allows moisture to reach the roots easily. However, the Deutzia doesn't like waterlogging.
Deutzians prefer nutritious soil. On humus-rich soils, fertilizer application in spring is sufficient. In barren locations you should fertilize once a month. Creating a layer of mulch has also proven effective.
Cutting and propagating Deutzians
As a single shrub, the Deutzia is cut back in spring after flowering. This stimulates flower formation. Rejuvenation pruning is recommended every two to three years so that the plant stays in shape and doesn't become too dense.
The Deutzia is very easy to propagate. For this purpose, cuttings are cut in summer. The young plants can be planted in the intended location the following spring.
Tip
Deutzians are very similar to the related pipe bush and the false jasmine. The biggest difference between the species is the flowering time. The Deutzia is the first shrub whose flowers appear in spring.
