Sowing is less recommended for snowballs. Seeds are rarely available in specialist stores and are difficult to remove from the fruit. Some cultivars of snowball only produce sterile flowers. These are then completely sterile.
How to propagate a viburnum bush?
The easiest way to propagate a viburnum bush is through root runners or cuttings. In summer, herbaceous cuttings of deciduous species or woody shoots of evergreen species can be cut and planted in potting soil. Sowing is less recommended.
Propagation by cuttings
The snowball is quite easy to grow from cuttings or so-called cuttings. Take a shoot that is already woody from evergreen species, but take a herbaceous shoot from deciduous varieties. Cut the cuttings at least 10 cm long and remove the lower leaves and any flowers. You can take the cuttings throughout the summer until around October.
Place the shoots in pots with potting soil or a mixture of equal parts potting soil and gravel. Water the cuttings well and then keep them evenly moist. The ideal growing temperature is between 20 and 30 °C. However, the blazing sun should definitely be avoided. Cultivation is a little easier and more successful if you grow the cuttings in a small greenhouse (€46.00 on Amazon) and/or treat them with a rooting powder before planting.
Propagation by root suckers
Some varieties, such as the common viburnum, form relatively many root runners. You can easily cut off these runners in spring and put them back in the ground somewhere else. Water the root pieces well and ensure that they do not dry out over the next few weeks. Then it will soon develop into a new viburnum bush.
Sometimes small young plants “just like that” grow out of the ground around the old bush. These usually developed from the root runners. Wait until the plants are strong enough, then you can easily transplant them to another location.

Tip
The viburnum is one of the few ornamental plants for which sowing is not recommended. Propagation by cuttings is much more successful.
