Aloe vera thrives best in a bright location. The leaf succulent, which comes from the deserts of Africa, can also tolerate full sun on the south-facing windowsill or in the winter garden, where less robust plants would die.

Which location does the aloe vera plant prefer?
The ideal location for aloe vera is a bright, sunny place in the house, or in the garden or on the balcony in summer. The plant tolerates full sun, but can turn reddish-brown in too intense sun. Temperatures below 10° Celsius should be avoided.
In the countries of origin and cultivation with tropical and subtropical climates, Aloe vera grows outdoors. In Germany, the frost-sensitive succulent thrives as a houseplant on sunny, south-facing windows, in greenhouses and winter gardens. Even during winter rest, it should not be exposed to temperatures below 10° Celsius.
What should be taken into account when choosing a location?
The fast-growing aloe vera requires a relatively large amount of space. One should be aware that the plant needs a larger pot every few years. Otherwise, the following applies when choosing a location:
- a bright, sunny place in the house,
- in the summer also in the garden or on the balcony,
- not too sunny if a beautiful green color of the indoor aloe is desired.
In full sun, the leaves of aloe vera can turn reddish-brown. At the tips of the leaves you can see that they turn brown and dry out. This is a natural phenomenon when exposed to too much sunlight and should not worry you. When the sun's strength diminishes, the leaves turn green again.
Tip
An imposing appearance is Aloe arborescens - a species of aloe with many rosette-like side and side branches and curved leaves. In an optimal location it can reach a height of several meters.
