With a growth rate of up to 30 cm per year, the radiant aralia can be described as fast-growing. When she runs at such speed, she needs a lot of space, not just on the surface, but also in her pot. How do you repot this houseplant correctly and when?

When and how should you repot a Schefflera?

The optimal repotting of a Schefflera takes place in spring to summer (February to May/June). Carefully remove old soil, cut off dead roots and place the plant in a slightly larger pot with drainage and humus-rich soil. After repotting, the plant can be trimmed.

Repotting – from spring to summer

After overwintering, the ideal time for repotting has come for this houseplant. Start the procedure in early spring (from February) and by summer (May/June) at the latest! It is best to repot the Schefflera before it shows its new growth.

How do you know if the Schefflera should be repotted?

Not every Schefflera needs to be repotted. Repotting depends on growth. This in turn depends, among other things, on the location, the nutrient content of the substrate and the age of the plant. A Schefflera that is grown in a bowl as a bonsai also needs to be repotted from time to time.

If one or more of the following applies, it is time to repot:

  • the pot is too small in relation to the Schefflera
  • the soil in the pot has sagged down
  • the roots of the plant stick out from the top
  • the roots of the plant look out of the drainage holes at the bottom
  • growth is only poor

Procedure for repotting

Time to take action! Gently remove your radiant aralia from the pot and be careful not to injure the shoots! Now the old earth is being shaken off. If this is difficult, you can also crumble them roughly with your hands. Since the roots should now be clearly visible, dead roots can be cut off.

The next step is to prepare a pot slightly larger than the old pot with fresh soil. Drainage is created at the bottom so that any remaining irrigation water can drain away quickly. For example, pebbles (€11.00 on Amazon) or expanded clay are suitable for drainage. The root ball of the Schefflera is placed there. The top of the bale is covered with humus-rich soil! Then: press down and pour.

Tip

You can cut back the Schefflera immediately after repotting.
