Particularly beautiful jasmine varieties often cannot be replaced because they are not available in stores. However, you can get offshoots from cuttings quite easily. Tips for cutting and propagating from cuttings.
How to propagate jasmine by cuttings?
To propagate jasmine from cuttings, cut off 10-15 cm long shoots in spring or summer and remove lower leaves and bud bases. Place the cuttings in germ-free, moist planting substrate, cover the pot and place it in a warm, bright place. The plants should flower after about two years.
Cut cuttings in spring or summer
Cuttings for propagating jasmine are best cut in spring or summer. Choose shoots that are already slightly woody. These are usually branches from the previous year.
Cut the cuttings at a slight angle with a sharp knife. They should be around 10 to 15 centimeters long.
Remove all bottom leaves. If bud buds are visible, they are removed. If the jasmine has very large leaves, cut them in half. This is not necessary for small leaves.
Preparing small pots
- Clean the pot
- Fill in plant substrate
- Make the plant substrate germ-free if necessary
As a planting substrate, you can use simple garden soil mixed with a little mature compost and sand or expanded clay. If not available, buy special potting soil (€6.00 at Amazon) from a garden store.
The soil must be free of germs, otherwise the cutting will quickly mold or rot. Place the soil in the hot oven for a few minutes to sterilize it.
The cuttings are inserted approximately five centimeters deep into the moistened soil. Then press the soil firmly.
The right location for the cuttings
Heat is important! Place the pots in a protected, bright, warm place. Temperatures around 20 degrees are ideal.
Keep the soil moist. It's even better if you protect the pot with a clear plastic bag. The cover ensures good air and soil moisture. But don't forget to remove the hood regularly to air the cuttings.
It takes more than two years for the first flowering
New leaves should have formed on the cutting next spring. Now you can plant it in a larger pot.
It takes at least two years for the jasmine to bloom for the first time.
Tip
Cuttings of false jasmine (Philadelphus), also known as farmer's jasmine or scented jasmine, are best cut in June. Place the cuttings in a prepared garden bed and provide winter protection.
