Daisies require little care, look good both in open meadows and in perennial beds with their basket flowers and are popular with gardeners. But are they completely harmless or do they contain toxins?
Are daisies poisonous to people or animals?
Daisies are non-toxic to humans and pets, but parts of the plant that contain polyacetylenes can cause skin irritation such as redness and itching in sensitive people. Precaution: Wear gloves when handling daisies.
Non-toxic but irritating
All types of daisies are non-poisonous. This applies to both adults and children. Even pets such as dogs, cats and rabbits are not at risk if they try the daisy.
Attention:
- all parts of the plant contain so-called polyacetylenes
- these substances can cause skin irritation
- Symptoms: redness and itching (contact dermatitis)
- especially affects sensitive people
- Sensitive people should therefore wear gloves (€9.00 on Amazon) when handling them
Tip
The parts of the daisy plant and especially the flowers are not only edible, but also have medicinal properties. Enjoyed pure or as tea, they have a calming and antispasmodic effect, and help with abscesses and open cuts.
