In the summer it shows off its blooming side and the rest of the time it impresses with its colorful leaves. The purple bell looks simply fantastic. But only if it is in the right location.
What location do purple bells need?
The optimal location for purple bells varies depending on the color of the foliage: yellow-leaved varieties prefer partial shade, orange-leaved and other varieties too. Red-leaved varieties require full sun. It is important to have permeable, nutrient-rich and slightly acidic soil; mulch helps regulate moisture.
From full sun to partial shade
Deep shade is completely unsuitable for all purple bells. The low incidence of light leads to sparse growth and flower failure. Therefore:
- yellow-leaved varieties: partial shade
- orange-leaved varieties: partial shade
- red-leaved varieties: (full) sun
- other varieties: partial shade
- the location can be below the crown of trees
Furthermore, in order to keep subsequent care to a minimum, you should make sure to plant the purple bell in permeable, nutrient-rich and slightly acidic soil.
Tip
Purple bells that are in direct sun need increased attention to the moisture content of the soil. It's best to mulch them from the start.
