Unlike beech trees, hornbeams do not have such a strong root system. They form heart roots that primarily go deep. The planting distance does not have to be that large. The ideal planting distance depends on whether you plant the tree individually or as a hedge.
What planting distance should you keep for hornbeams?
The ideal planting distance for hornbeams varies depending on the intended use: As a single tree they require at least 10 meters of space, while in a hedge a distance of 50 centimeters is recommended. For a faster sealing effect, the distance can be reduced and thinned out later.
Planting distance as a single tree
How much space the hornbeam needs depends on whether you prune it heavily or simply let it grow. Natural shapes need more space to show off. It should be at least ten meters.
Planting distance in the hedge
Maintain a planting distance of 50 centimeters in the hedge. Plant two hornbeams per meter.
Tip
If you want to close up a hornbeam hedge very quickly, you can plant it at a shorter planting distance in autumn. However, you will then have to remove every other tree later.
