It looks very similar to the well-known papyrus plant and yet is very stubborn. Cyprus grass looks like a graceful reed plant and can even be grown indoors. Read below to find out whether pruning is necessary!
Do I have to cut my Cyprus grass?
Regular cutting is not absolutely necessary for Cyprus grass. However, it can make sense to shorten the fast-growing grass if necessary, cut it back before overwintering, take cuttings or offshoots or remove brown shoots.
A cut is generally not necessary
The Cyprus grass also grows well without regular cutting. So generally it is not necessary to cut it. But there are several reasons that a cut can make sense.
Extremely fast growing – up to 250 cm per year
The main reason is that Cyprus grass is extremely fast-growing. It can grow up to 250 cm per year. However, this is not usually the case with indoor culture. Outdoor plants are more likely to venture upwards so quickly. So if your Cyprus grass is too big for you, you can shorten it.
Cut back before overwintering
Since the Cyprus grass is not hardy, it should be overwintered. Before it is put away for the winter, it is advisable to cut it down. It can be radically shortened - depending on your preference.
Use a pruning tool to obtain cuttings or offshoots
If you want to propagate your Cyprus grass, you can do so using cuttings or offshoots. This also requires a cut. This is how cutting propagation works:
- Cleanly cut off 15 cm long stalks
- Short the leaves in half on the stalk
- Place the leaf upside down in a glass of water
- place in a bright and warm place
- after 2 to 4 weeks the cutting is rooted
A cut is also appropriate to obtain offshoots. The offshoots appear above the head of a Cyprus grass. Cut off the offshoot and proceed as with the cuttings.
Remove brown shoots
In spring, the Cyprus grass often looks a bit worn out after overwintering in the four walls of your home. Some parts of the plant are dry or brown. You can simply cut off such unsightly areas (wilted, dried out, brown). They grow back again.
Tip
Some types of Cyprus grass only grow to a maximum height of 40 cm. With these you rarely have to use scissors or a knife to shorten them.
