In spring it is one of THE flowering bushes that you can't pass by without looking. But what about summer? Does the snow forsythia need special care?
How do I care for the snow forsythia in summer?
In summer, the snow forsythia needs regular watering, fertilizing and possibly pruning or topiary. It is also the ideal time to propagate them through seeds, planters or cuttings and thus ensure a more beautiful growth pattern.
Summertime – fruits and seeds ripen
While the snow forsythia stays in the background in summer and is hardly noticeable, it secretly produces its nut fruits. These are small, rounded, broad-winged and brown in color. This makes them less than spectacular. But they are needed for sowing. If you want to grow snow forsythia from seeds, you can collect the nut seeds in June/July.
Ideal time to multiply
It's not just the sowing that takes place in the summer. Snow forsythia can also be propagated using planters or cuttings. This is how you proceed with the propagation of cuttings:
- from June and until September
- Cut off 10 to 15 cm long shoots (e.g. when pruning)
- remove lower leaves
- put in pots with potting soil
- keep moist and cover if necessary
At temperatures between 20 and 25 °C (room temperature), the cuttings usually root quickly. It is best if you place the cuttings in a shady but warm place until they root, e.g. B. in the living room or on the balcony. They are not planted out until spring of the following year.
Improving the growth pattern – cutting snow forsythia
The snow forsythia looks densely branched to sparse, partly overhanging and rather inconspicuous in summer. If you don't like it the way it is, now is the right time to cut it back or cut it to shape. Under no circumstances should you do the cut until autumn! Otherwise, cut off the new flower buds.
Don’t forget to fertilize and water
In summer, snow forsythia needs a lot of water. If there is no rain, drought and heat, you should provide your snow forsythia with water. You can also fertilize the plant. Both watering and fertilizing are important so that many flower buds can form.
Tip
If you want to grow snow forythia from seeds, you should use the fresh seeds in the summer. They have the best germination potential!
