The snowflake flower (Sutera) originally comes from South Africa and can grow a veritable sea of flowers in the right location. The balcony plant originally from South Africa with flowers in the shape of snowflakes is now available in numerous flower colors thanks to active breeding efforts.
Where should snowflake flowers be best placed?
The ideal location for the snowflake flower is a bright place that is protected from extreme midday heat. Waterlogging should be avoided and good drainage for excess irrigation water should be ensured. Suitable locations are balcony boxes, tall pots or hanging baskets.
Extreme doesn't like the snowflake flower so much
The snowflake flower can't cope well with extreme weather and location conditions, so locations with extreme midday heat on south-facing balconies should be avoided. The snowflake flower also has difficulty withstanding waterlogging, which is why excess irrigation water should drain well. Otherwise, the snowflake flower is rather undemanding when it comes to the substrate, as long as it retains moisture well and does not dry out completely. Despite their sensitivity to heat and drought, these plants should be kept as bright as possible to ensure a high number of flowers.
Use the snowflake flower for balcony and garden design
The charming and at the same time extremely unobtrusive snowflake flower is not hardy in Central Europe, which is why it is usually planted outdoors in the following locations:
- in the balcony box
- in tall pots
- in a flower hanging basket
Planting in a tall pot or in a hanging basket is advantageous because the snowflake flower grows creeping and, like the petunia, produces relatively long shoots.
Tip
Since the snowflake flower is very sensitive to frost despite its “wintry” shaped flowers, it must be kept indoors over the winter when the temperature is single-digit plus.
