The common trumpet tree (Catalpa bignonioides) originally comes from the warm and sunny southeast of the USA, but has also been increasingly cultivated here for some time, primarily as an ornamental tree.
Where should a trumpet tree be planted?
The ideal location for a trumpet tree (Catalpa bignonioides) is sunny and sheltered from the wind, with plenty of room for growth. The tree prefers nutrient-rich, slightly moist soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH value.
Sunny location with lots of space preferred
The trumpet tree needs a lot of sun and warmth and a location protected from the wind. The deciduous deciduous tree tolerates direct sunlight and heat without any problems, but it is quite sensitive to frost. Unless you want to plant a small cultivar like the ball trumpet tree “Nana”, you should also plan for plenty of space - the trumpet tree can grow up to 18 meters high and develops a fairly sprawling crown.
nutrient-rich, slightly moist soil is ideal
In its homeland, the deciduous tree can be found primarily on river banks and floodplains. As a result, you should also choose a slightly moist, very nutrient-rich soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH value in this country.
Tip
Although both plants have a similar name, you should not confuse the trumpet tree with the highly poisonous flowering shrub Brugmansia (also known as "angel's trumpet").
