The pond lily genus is quite widespread in the world. You can find these plants in northern America, Europe and much of Asia. The habitats and requirements of the different species are correspondingly different.
What are the special features of pond lilies?
Pond roses are easy-care aquatic plants that ideally thrive in sunny, warm locations. They tend to grow and are easy to divide. It is important not to confuse them with water lilies, as they are different plants.
The different types of pond lilies
The small pond lily occurs in Scandinavia, but also in mountain or moorland lakes in Central Europe and even in Siberia. The yellow flowers are only 2 – 3 cm large and have a delicate scent. The Indian pond rose, which also blooms yellow, produces 5 – 12 cm flowers. These appear from May to August. Their original homeland is North America.
The best location for pond lilies
Most pond lilies for home garden ponds prefer a sunny and warm place. You would like to have at least five hours of sunshine a day, then they will bloom reliably, profusely and for a long time. Only a few varieties are willing to do this in partial shade.
In full shade, only the yellow pond lily comes into question. By the way, you shouldn't confuse the pond lily with the water lily, they have completely different flowers in different colors and round instead of heart-shaped leaves.
Planting pond roses
You can plant pond roses either directly in the pond bottom or in special plant baskets. The baskets make it easier for you to care for the pond lilies later and protect the roots of the plant from being nibbled on or dug up by fish. When planted in the pond bottom, however, the pond lilies root deeper. This means they are well protected in strong currents or frost.
Take care of pond roses properly
Pond roses are quite easy to care for if they are selected to suit the location. Native varieties are hardy and can stay in the pond all year round. Tropical varieties, on the other hand, need warm and bright winter quarters because they are very sensitive to frost.
