You can love it, but you can also hate it - the ranunculus bush. It is already making life difficult for many a gardener. The reason is that they did not plant this plant properly and as a result it spreads unhindered. A root barrier can help.
How do I create a root barrier for a ranunculus bush?
To create a root barrier on a ranunculus bush, use a bottomless mason's bucket, sturdy nets, plastic plates or large stones. Place the root barrier 50-70 cm deep and 5 cm above the soil surface to prevent the shrub from spreading its runners.
A plant with an enormous urge to spread
The ranunculus bush is known to become rampant if left unchecked. It reproduces within a short period of time and completely without your intervention. It does this with the help of its underground extensions.
As a shallow-rooted plant, this plant is extremely propagative. If you don't have enough space or the runners bother you, you should do something about it before or while you plant the ranunculus bush! Otherwise, real thickets can even form.
Stop the urge to reproduce
Installing a root barrier sounds more complicated than it is. Basically, a large bucket or a bricklayer's bucket is sufficient. Remove the soil and place the ranunculus bush there and into the planting hole. Also suitable as a root barrier:
- stable, fine-meshed nets (€79.00 at Amazon)
- Plastic plates
- big stones
Put the root barrier in the planting hole when planting! If you forget to do this, you can do it later if you move the plant. The plant can be cut back a little.
How deep should the root barrier be left in the ground?
When planting from the surface, place the root barrier 50 to 70 cm deep. Make sure that the root barrier protrudes from the top of the soil! About 5cm. This is important because the ranunculus bush likes to spread roots on the surface.
What else should you consider?
If you do not install a root barrier, you must expect that the ranunculus bush will develop plenty of runners. If necessary, these must be cut off or torn out. Please also note that when planting the shrub, a minimum distance of 50 cm from other plants must be maintained!
Tip
The varieties that produce double flowers are generally less likely to reproduce. They usually don't produce that many runners.
