When are ranunculus season?

Ranunculus are in season as cut flowers from January to May, favored by Dutch greenhouses. Garden ranunculus, on the other hand, blooms in summer, around mid-May to the end of July. The flowering season can be extended through care such as cleaning, fertilizing and watering.

Greenhouse ranunculus – starting in January

In the Netherlands, ranunculus are grown in greenhouses. Due to the constant warmth, the specimens planted there bloom in January. The cut flowers are packaged and sent around the world. In Germany they are available in stores or from florists from January to around May.

The cut flowers are ideal for colorful spring bouquets. The daffodil season begins almost at the same time as the ranunculus season. Both flowers together in a vase create a harmonious picture.

Garden ranunculus are in season in summer

After the main season of cut ranunculus is over, the season of garden ranunculus begins. The flowers open around mid-May. They can be viewed over several weeks. The flowers usually fade towards the end of July.

Extend the flowering season

You can extend the blooming season of ranunculus in your garden with a few simple tricks:

  • Clean up wilted flowers immediately
  • fertilize regularly (1 week apart)
  • water abundantly to keep the soil moist
  • Potted plants: put in the shade

As soon as the flowering season is over, you should gradually reduce the fertilizer application. Watering can also be omitted. In order for the tuber to prepare for winter, the soil should now be dry at times. If the old stems and leaves have yellowed, they can be removed.

Tip

Onion season is in early spring. Then they can be planted fresh.
