Whether in the rose bed, in the perennial bed, on the house wall or elegantly pulled up on a trellis - shrub roses do not fail to have their effect if you use and care for them correctly. But first deciding which variety is the right one can be difficult
Which shrub rose varieties are recommended?
Popular shrub rose varieties are available in different colors, such as: 'Snow White' (white), 'Ghislaine de Feligonde' (soft yellow), 'Westerland' (copper orange) or 'Alexandra Princesse de Louxembourg' (pink). Special two-colored and fragrant varieties include 'Freisinger Morgenröte', 'Bonanza' or 'Paula Vapelle'.
Single color varieties by color
Classic, subtle, pure and innocent - that's how the white-flowering shrub roses look. These include 'Snow White' with a height of up to 120 cm and up to 9 cm large, densely double flowers, 'Princess of Wales' and 'Artemis' with pure white flowers. Like all other shrub roses, they tolerate pruning well.
Yellow to orange blooming shrub roses bring color to the garden and provide atmospheric accents that spread happiness. The following varieties are particularly worth mentioning here:
- ‘Ghislaine de Feligonde’: pale yellow
- ‘Sahara’: golden yellow
- ‘Amber Queen’: orange, filled
- 'Light Queen Lucia': lemon yellow, slightly double, 10 cm in diameter, ADR Rose
- ‘Westerland’: copper orange, filled, ADR Rose
Red to pink shrub roses create romance. The best varieties here include:
- ‘Alexandra Princesse de Louxembourg’: pink, heavily filled
- ‘Tascaria’: carmine red, slightly filled
- ‘Grandhotel’: blood red, densely filled, like a rose flower
- 'Eden Rose 85': silky pink, densely filled, nostalgic
Bicolor varieties
Two-colored varieties do not appear kitschy and inappropriate in a solitary position, but rather strange and attention-grabbing. These examples are appealing, for example:
- ‘Freisinger Morgenröte’: pink to yellow and orange
- ‘Bonanza’: yellow to red
- ‘Mozart’: pink and white in the middle
- 'Juliana von Stolberg': white with pink edge
- 'César': creamy yellow to dark pink, later changing color to soft pink and yellow on the underside
Strikingly scented varieties
You're less interested in the colors and more interested in a great, unforgettable rose scent? Then you should have one or more of the following shrub roses in your garden plants!
- ‘Paula Vapelle’: good scent, white
- ‘Westerland’: smells wonderful, copper-colored
- ‘Augusta Louise’ delicately scented (fruity-sweet), heavily filled, delicate pink
- 'Rose de Resht': strong damask scent, pink, heavily double, pompom-like flowers
- ‘Julia Renaissance’: intensely fragrant, creamy white, filled
Tip
Not only the exterior, but also the internal characteristics such as resistance to fungal diseases should not be ignored when choosing a variety!
