Every almond tree delights with beautiful flowers in spring. However, hobby gardeners should take a closer look at the variety. Not everyone is hardy.
Which almond tree varieties are hardy?
Hardy almond tree varieties such as Amanda, with delicate pink flowers, and Rosella, with pink flowers, also thrive in cooler regions of Germany. They need an ideal location and can overwinter outdoors after 3-4 years.
Small mimosas make it big
Many people still seem to be enchanted by the myth of the almond tree with southern origins. It is actually the case that almond trees initially struggled a bit in our climate.
Over time, however, some absolutely optimal varieties emerged. These even survive the harsh German winter without much flinching. These are primarily located in our wine-growing regions. A more subtle climate dominates there. This has a wonderful effect on the lush growth of the sweet almond.

These varieties were created through excellent selection. They even survived the particularly harsh winter of 1985/86. Amanda and Rosella still prove their worth today, especially in cooler regions of Germany. If the hobby gardener provides an ideal location, nothing stands in the way of the growth of this almond.
Winter-hardy varieties only from a specialist
Ambitious hobby gardeners like to try things out themselves. Growing your own almond tree always motivates you to experiment. Under certain conditions, even in our latitudes, small plants can grow into larger trees.
Despite all the effort and work, your own shoots will never develop into winter-hardy varieties. The hobby gardener can easily plant them in planters. These overwinter in the winter garden from late autumn to spring without any problems. Since the almond tree sheds its leaves in autumn, it feels just as comfortable in frost-protected cellars.
Tips & Tricks
When planting small trees from specialist retailers, the first 3 to 4 cold seasons are spent in the winter garden or basement. The almond can then overwinter outdoors without restrictions.
