Rambler roses have only been conquering German gardens for a few years, after all, they are a comparatively young breed. In contrast to the climbers, these roses from the climbing rose group are able to climb more or less independently - their name already suggests this, after all, the English word "ramble" means nothing more than "tendrils". Like other roses, rambler roses require careful care for he althy growth and abundant blooms.
How do you properly care for a rambler rose?
Caring for rambler roses includes regular fertilization, occasional watering, caring pruning and protection from diseases such as mildew. Shoots should be attached to trellises to prevent damage from wind or storms.
Do you have to water rambler roses?
Except in very hot and dry periods and after planting or fertilization, you do not need to water planted rambler roses separately. Thanks to their very deep tap roots, the plants are able to supply themselves with sufficient water. If you do need to water, avoid wetting the leaves.
When and how often should you fertilize rambler roses?
Like all roses, ramblers are heavy feeders and should therefore be fertilized regularly. There are three fertilization dates per year for planted specimens:
- At the beginning of April, fertilize with an organic fertilizer or special rose fertilizer.
- The second time after the first flowering.
- The third time as final fertilization with patent potash between the beginning and middle of August.
When should rambler roses be pruned?
Basically, pruning is not necessary, apart from the necessary care or thinning cut. However, if pruning is still necessary, the appropriate time depends on the flowering times of the rambler rose variety. Ramblers that bloom more often are pruned in spring, while ramblers that bloom once are pruned directly after flowering.
How should rambler roses be cut?
Actually, only sick and dead shoots as well as branches that are too close need to be removed. Pruning should be avoided if possible.
Do you have to secure the shoots of rambler roses?
Although the rambler rose is very capable of holding itself due to its very soft and flexible shoots, you should still attach the shoots to the climbing aid with raffia or a similar material. The meter-high rambler roses tend to be torn down and destroyed in strong winds or storms, which can be prevented by tying them up.
Are ramblers susceptible to certain diseases?
Like all roses, rambler roses are quite susceptible to various fungal diseases, especially powdery mildew.
Tip
If possible, avoid planting rambler roses together with climbers. Both groups of roses are quite similar in appearance, but have different needs and characteristics.
