Even the coldest winters don't affect the Lenzrose. Already in early spring it delights the gardener with its pretty flowers in many colors. The perennial is extremely easy to care for. What you need to consider when caring for spring roses.
How do you properly care for spring roses?
Caring for Lenten roses includes avoiding waterlogging, fertilizing with compost, occasionally cutting dead stems and wilted leaves, and mulching in autumn. They are hardy and do not require any special protection. Be careful of sensitive roots when removing weeds.
Do spring roses need to be watered?
Lenzenroses prefer it dry to moist. The spring bloomers cannot tolerate waterlogging at all. Watering is not necessary as the soil is usually moist enough during the flowering period in spring.
Most spring roses die down over the summer. Even if individual leaves are lying on the ground withering, the perennials must not be watered.
How are spring roses properly fertilized?
If you have improved the soil with compost before planting, the Lentenrose does not need any further fertilizer. It is recommended to mulch them well in autumn. This keeps the soil sufficiently moist. Weeds are kept away and the decaying material releases new nutrients.
When is cutting the spring rose necessary?
- Cut off wilted flowers
- remove wilted and diseased leaves
- Cut the perennial completely back in autumn or before flowering
What diseases and pests can occur?
Aphids are more common. They can be rinsed with a jet of water. Treatment with dishwashing liquid is also helpful.
More rarely, a viral disease called “Black Death” occurs. The leaves and flowers turn black along the veins. Infected spring roses cannot be saved and must be disposed of with household waste - do not throw them in the compost!
Are spring roses hardy?
As a plant that shows its first flowers in February, the Lenten rose is absolutely winter hardy. It doesn't need any winter protection. A mulch cover is still useful, as the perennial is then more likely to sprout.
Dense blankets of snow can be a problem for very young plants. They should therefore be provided with light protection. This also applies to seedlings that are grown in pots.
Tip
The roots of the Lenten rose are very sensitive. In addition to the main root that grows deep into the earth, the perennial forms a dense network of roots beneath the surface. When pulling weeds, make sure that you only hoe the soil superficially, if at all.
