The shrub rose 'Leonardo da Vinci' remains rather low with an average height of around 50 to 60 centimeters, but can also be wonderfully grafted onto a trunk or half-stem. The very densely filled, pink flowers appear lush and incessant between June and September, and they also exude a pleasant rose scent. The rose 'Leonardo da Vinci' grafted onto a standard stem can be planted in the garden or cultivated in a sufficiently large container.
How do I care for the rose 'Leonardo da Vinci' as a standard tree?
The standard rose 'Leonardo da Vinci' is characterized by densely filled, pink flowers and a pleasant scent. The robust plant requires pruning in spring and regular removal of spent flowers, but it is different when overwintering, as the grafting site must be protected.
What you need to pay particular attention to when it comes to standard roses
The 'Leonardo da Vinci' rose, which blooms more often, is considered to be very robust and relatively insensitive to typical rose diseases such as powdery mildew or sooty mold. However, you cannot equate the preferences in terms of location, soil conditions and care of the shrub-like 'Leonardo da Vinci' with the standard rose 'Leonardo da Vinci' - after all, the latter variant is always a refinement in which factors such as winter hardiness etc.primarily determined by the base used.
Why standard roses are more expensive than shrub roses
Many rose lovers are surprised at the prices that seem very high for standard roses, after all, the shrub or bed rose forms of the same variety are always a lot lower. This increase in price has to do with the more difficult cultivation of standard roses, which first have to be trained with a lot of patience and craftsmanship - although this process can take several years.
The correct care of a standard rose 'Leonardo da Vinci'
Basically, the standard rose 'Leonardo da Vinci' is cared for in the same way as its shrub-like version, this applies especially to pruning. As a permanent bloomer, 'Leonardo da Vinci' should be cut back in spring so that it does not go bald and continuously develops new flowers. It also makes sense to remove dead flowers regularly. When it comes to watering and fertilizing, standard roses are no different from shrub or bed roses.
Standard rose 'Leonardo da Vinci' overwinter well
However, there are serious differences when overwintering: Since the processing point is always above the surface of the earth, there is a risk of frostbite in cold winters. Either you take precautions by packing your standard rose for the winter or you make it winter-proof as follows: In late autumn, standard rose stems are carefully bent to the ground over the cone interface (i.e. the stub near the ground) and the crown is covered with soil about 20 centimeters high. Make sure that the tenon interface remains about a hand's width above the ground. However, only bend the stem when it is still young and flexible!
Tip
Launched standard roses are raised again around mid-March and tied to stakes. However, this should only be done in cloudy (but mild!) weather, as the shoots that have previously been embedded in the soil are very sensitive to the sun.
