The 'Rose de Resht' is a very old rose that no one knows exactly when and how it actually came into being. It is usually sold as unrooted, which makes a lot of sense (be sure not to purchase a 'Rose de Resht' that has only been inoculated or grafted on!). The 'Rose de Resht' is extremely hardy and also very robust. Since it is free of any copyright, you can not only purchase it particularly cheaply, but also propagate it yourself as you wish.

How can I propagate the Rose de Resht?

The Rose de Resht can be propagated by root runners, cuttings or cuttings. In the case of root runners, they are separated from the mother plant in autumn and replanted directly. Cuttings or cuttings are cut in August or winter and later placed in potting soil or directly into the bed.

Propagation by root suckers

This is particularly easy via so-called root runners, which the 'Rose de Resht' produces in abundance. This type of rose is extremely vigorous and will quickly outgrow you if it is not cut regularly or even kept in a pot. Simply cut off the root runners with a spade in late summer or autumn and carefully dig them out. The young plants can then be moved immediately to their new location.

Propagate 'Rose de Resht' through cuttings

Propagation via cuttings also works very well with the robust 'Rose de Resht'. The approximately 15 to 20 centimeter long, well woody cuttings are cut in August or September and should be placed individually in plant pots and kept cool but frost-free over the winter.

  • Cut several cuttings, if possible from shoots that have just flowered.
  • Keep the cutting surface slightly slanted to make it easier for the cutting to absorb water.
  • Remove the flower head and all side shoots and leaves except for the top pair of leaves.
  • Dip the cut surface to be rooted into a rooting substrate (€8.00 on Amazon).
  • Plant each cutting individually in a plant pot.
  • This should be filled with good potting soil.
  • Water the cutting well.
  • Put a halved PET bottle or a disposable glass over it.
  • This serves as a mini greenhouse.
  • The cutting should be in a bright, but not directly sunny location.

Cuts can also be used well

Propagation via cuttings works in a similar way to cuttings, except that they are stored over the winter and not planted until spring. The wood, which is at least 20 centimeters long and is well lignified and completely devoid of leaves and side shoots, is cut in winter and then stored in a cool, dark place, wrapped in damp cloths. They are either put in pots or in the bed in spring.

Tip

If you want to plant a rose hedge, you can create it from as many cuttings of the 'Rose de Resht' as possible - this vigorous rose variety is ideal for such a project.
