The dog rose is quite easy to propagate. In principle, it will multiply on its own if you don't prevent it. You also have the choice between targeted sowing, propagation through runners or planting cuttings.

What is the best way to propagate the dog rose?

The dog rose can be propagated by sowing, root runners or cuttings. Sowing is tedious, while using root suckers is the easiest. Cuttings should be cut in late fall and planted in spring.

Propagation by sowing

Targeted sowing is the most difficult way of propagating the dog rose, because the seeds must first be thoroughly cleaned of the pulp, dried and then treated with cold before they can be sown. If this is not too much effort for you, then sow the seeds in a pot with sowing soil after they have spent about four weeks in the refrigerator.

Cover the seeds with some soil and moisten them slightly. Then place the pot in a moderately warm place. The temperature should be between 10 and 25 °C. Now you should have a lot of patience, because germination can take a few months.

Propagation by runners

Since the dog rose forms numerous runners, it is easy to propagate in this way. Simply separate a few runners from your dog rose in spring or autumn with a sharp spade. Shorten the root pieces by about a third and plant them in the desired location. Keep the soil moist initially, this will make it easier for the new dog rose to grow.

Propagation by cuttings

Cuttings are best cut from strong annual shoots in late autumn. The cuttings should be about 20 cm long. At the top, make a straight cut, about 1 – 2 cm above a bud. At the bottom, cut the cutting diagonally and directly under a bud.

All winter long, the cuttings are stored in moist sand with the highest possible humidity. Only in spring is it cut again at the bottom and planted in loose soil. This can be done in a pot or directly while cooking.

The best propagation tips for the dog rose:

  • Sowing possible but tedious
  • easiest way of propagation: root runners
  • easy to implement: propagation by cuttings

Tip

The easiest way to propagate is through runners, even a beginner gardener can do it quite well.
