The professional propagation of an amaryllis is not a closed book. Familiarize yourself with two methods of breeding offspring that are easy to do. Read here how to do it with seeds and bulbs.
How to propagate an amaryllis?
Amaryllis can be propagated by sowing seeds or by breeding bulbs. When sowing, seeds are planted in potting soil and allowed to germinate. When propagating with seed bulbs, small bulbs are separated from the mother plant and planted in potting soil until they are large enough.
Sowing instructions
In order for a knight's star to produce fruits with seeds, the flowers must be pollinated. It is enough to shake the stems every now and then so that the pollen is distributed. If in doubt, brush over the pistils and pollen with a soft brush. If the petals wilt and the ovaries swell, the fruits ripen within 4 to 6 weeks. Remove the seeds from the opened capsules and sow them like this:
- Fill small pots with potting soil and moisten
- Place a few seeds on the substrate at a distance of 5 cm and just press them down
- Put on a transparent cap or a plastic bag
Germination takes 2 to 4 weeks in a partially shaded location with normal room temperatures. Keep the substrate slightly moist and ventilate the cover daily. Once the seedlings have reached a height of 5 cm, the cover can be removed. Care for a young knight's star continuously until the first flowering, without any autumn rest period.
This is how you can propagate with onions
Vegetative propagation with breeding onions is much quicker and with predictable results. If you want a young knight star with the magnificent attributes of its mother plant, proceed as follows:
- Only separate the breeding bulbs from the mother bulb when they have a diameter of 3 cm
- Plant in potting soil so that half of them are exposed
Wate regularly in a partially shaded, warm window seat and do not give any fertilizer. Once the bulbs have reached a diameter of 8 cm, repot and start the normal care program for an adult Ritterstern.
Tip
The flowers of an amaryllis always grow in the direction of the light. A proud knight's star can tip over from the pot if its flower stem leans too much towards the sun. Therefore, rotate the container 45 degrees daily to promote even growth. Automatic turntables for plants, which specialist retailers offer at a reasonable price, are practical for this purpose.
