A bamboo hedge is extremely decorative and very easy to care for, provided you choose the right varieties. Bamboo phylostachus requires a rhizome barrier along the entire length of the hedge, otherwise it will become very rampant. This is not necessary with bamboo fargesia.
How do I plant a Bamboo Fargesia hedge?
Varieties such as “Chinese Wonder” or “Black Pearl” are suitable for a bamboo Fargesia hedge. Plant them 70 - 100 cm apart, add compost to the planting holes, water well and maintain with regular watering, especially in the first year.
Which bamboo is best for a hedge?
Since bamboo fargesia does not grow, you do not need to install growth barriers (rhizome barriers) in such a hedge. On the one hand, the hedge is planted much more quickly and, on the other hand, is also a little easier to care for than a hedge made from rhizome-forming bamboo species. Because these often do not adhere to the set limits and form meter-long runners.
In principle, all bamboo fargesia are suitable for planting a hedge. The bright red stalks of the “Chinese Wonder” red bamboo look particularly decorative. The fast-growing Fargesia nitida “Black Pearl” with its blackish stalks also makes a very beautiful hedge.
Planting a bamboo hedge
Depending on the size of the variety you choose, place your bamboo plants at a distance of around 70 cm to 1 m. Add some well-rotted compost to the individual planting holes as a growing aid. Since the bamboo is very thirsty, it should also be watered well. If the soil is not permeable enough, loosen it a little with sand or gravel.
How to care for your bamboo hedge
To keep the ground around your hedge moist for longer, you can create a mulching layer of bark mulch. Above all, water the young bamboo well and regularly. It should be watered at the latest when the bamboo curls up its leaves. This is also necessary in winter, otherwise the bamboo risks dying of thirst. However, it tolerates frost very well. Fargesias are hardy down to around – 20 °C or – 25 °C.
How to plant a bamboo hedge:
- Choose bamboo according to the location (sunny or shady)
- Planting distance approx. 70 – 100 cm
- Put compost in the planting holes
- Water the bamboo well
- water particularly carefully in the first year and possibly provide winter protection
Tip
Bamboo fargesia is very suitable for an easy-care hedge. It serves as visual and noise protection.
