The very easy-care lucky bamboo does not require pruning, but it tolerates it quite well. This means you can cut your cuttings for propagation without worrying or shorten the Lucky Bamboo if necessary.

How can I trim my lucky bamboo correctly?

To shorten a lucky bamboo, use a clean knife, cut a piece off the top or divide the trunk into at least 10 cm long pieces. The cut stem pieces for propagation can be placed in a clean water container and planted later.

Botanically speaking, the lucky bamboo is not a bamboo at all but a dragon tree. It therefore has to be treated completely differently than “real” bamboo. You can also approach propagation differently by cutting cuttings or shortening a lucky bamboo that has grown too tall.

How do I cut my lucky bamboo correctly?

Always use a very clean knife when trimming your lucky bamboo. Otherwise germs could penetrate the plant and damage it. Depending on the size of your Lucky Bamboo, you can only cut off a piece at the top or even divide the trunk into several parts.

However, the sections should all be at least 10 cm long if you want to use them for propagation. Leave the rooted trunk piece in the previous container. If necessary, close the cut surface with some slightly cooled wax.

Place the cut piece or the remaining trunk pieces in a clean container with water. Under no circumstances should this contain lime; it is better to use stale water or rainwater. Place the vessel in a warm place and ensure that the water level is evenly high. If necessary, add some water.

The lucky bamboo can only be planted when clearly visible roots have formed. If you are not sure whether the roots are strong enough, then it is better to wait a while before repotting.

The most important things in brief:

  • basically only use clean tools
  • Pruning not necessary, but well tolerated
  • Use cut plant parts as cuttings

Tip

If you want to shorten your lucky bamboo, then use this opportunity to propagate it.
